Breakfast is the most important meal of the day - and a luxury when you've got time to eat your way into the morning. You can cook eggs just the way you like them at home but it is oh so nice to get good service, a delicious menu and real coffee to start the day.

We've listed some of Brisbane's top spots for breakfast (in no particular order).

Groove Train - City

With river views and a hip vibe, it's a newcomer to Brisbane's breakfast scene.

Gun Shop Café - West End

Seriously good breakfasts, always busy with a deserved reputation.

Eves on the Park - Roma Street Parkland, City

Great value breakfast amongst the quiet greenery of the Parkland.

Sassafras Café - Paddington

A casual, eclectic interior that's buzzing at breakfast time. Order at the counter but relax with magazines and papers to read. Recommend the ricotta pancakes.

David's off Oxford - Bulimba

Bulimba's hidden breakfast secret. David's offers divine breakfasts (try the trio of mushrooms with perfectly scrambled eggs on soughdough with truffle oil or the decadant eggs benedict). The brew of choice is Merlo Coffee.

Tognini's - Milton, Spring Hill and State Library South Bank

Yum sweet and savoury muffins plus hot options too.

City Gardens Café - City

Tucked away amongst the quiet of the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, it's open for breakfast every day from 8am.

Fatboys Café & Ric's Bar - Fortitude Valley

Located in the Brunswick Street Mall, enjoy cheap and fast breakfast food with a spot that's great for people watching.

Au Cirque - New Farm

A small place with fabulous design and decoration. There's an upstairs seating area and some organic food options. Open every day from 7am.

Café Conti - Wilston

One of the rare places to serve traditional breakfast fare of liver and bacon. But if that's not your favourite, there's always pancakes, eggs benedict or bubble and squeak.

Cabinessence - Paddington

Situated in an old service station on La Trobe Terrace, this is a great pit stop on a Sunday morning when there's a small fashion market outside. The avocado on toasted sour dough, with extra virgin olive oil and cracked black pepper is the best you will ever eat.

Jetty Kiosk - Manly

Located at William Gunn Jetty, you can dine right on the water, admire the beautiful yachts and imagine a day on the bay.

Rabottini's - Scarborough Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, seven days a week. Located opposite Scarborough Park with a beautiful view of Moreton Bay. The Rabottini's special breakfast has eggs, spinach, feta, mushrooms, chorizo, ciabatta and is delicious.

What about Vue Lounge at New Farm? Awesome coffee and some really yummy breakfast options. Can definitely recommend the Vue omelette. Delicious!

Poppies at South Bank have some fantastic brekkie options. Their scrambled egs are as good as you'll find. And their breakfast roll with bacon, egg, swiss cheese, caramelised onion and smokey bbq sauce is awesome. Yum!

Old Charlie   from New Farm says:

I'd gotten up early on Sunday morning and went for a Peter Falk up to the local newsagent to pick up a couple of casket tickets. I was heading down Brunswick Street when I came across a queue of young people waiting outside an establishment. Now I hadn't been into this joint since Les closed down his boot repair business, but these days it's some sort of teahouse.

Sitting out on the footpath were two fellas getting into some bowls of muesli. Now I know what you're thinking. What does old Charlie think of two gentlemen eating breakfast together on a Sunday morning? Well don't you worry about old Charlie. You don't spend 50 years in New Farm without knowing which way the wind blows.

Anyhow I went home and told young Merle about it. My old man queued for food in the thirties and I thought the economy might have gone south. Young Merle tells me that there is often a queue on weekends at this joint.

Well this left me scratching my head I have to say. Why would kids spend good scratch to stand in a queue, only to sit down in the street for a bowl of birdseed?

Oh well, its no business of mine, but I noted the date on the calendar at home. Sunday, May 11, 2008 - Brisbane is officially insane.
